Fair do's. Chris has got one and the games are too addictive.

Re: Ps3

I can defin. recommand the PSP. Games like God Of War, the latest Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, ... are great. You can even go on your PS3 with wifi, watch the movies on your PS3 harddrive and play a game like Pixeljunk Monsters (doesn't work for most games though).

Re: Ps3

With all the major blockbusters coming out (UC 2, MW2, Dragon Age), one might forget Borderlands. It's a crossing between an RPG and a FPS (though more FPS than RPG, contrary to Fallout 3), has lots of weapons & a unique art style.

It's getting good reviews:

Re: Ps3

"me too" on the PSP. It has some decent 2D games as well. Sony in  their infinite wisdom again decreed that there would be no 2d games on the PS3 (they tried that with the PS2 as well, early on) so that means no buy from me. Xbox360 is slowly getting a decent collection but none of that is coming out in Europe.

Aside from the PSP I'm quite "ho-hum" about the current generation of consoles so far.

There's some great 2D nonetheless on PS3 (I'm a 2D fan myself), mostly in the PSN category (downloadable games): Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD is awesome for SF fans, there's Marvel vs Capcom 2 (no updated visuals however), Bionic Commando Rearmed (3D but 2D play) is a great update of the original, there's Pixeljunk Monsters (superb tower defense game), lots of puzzle games (Critter Crunch!),... and Castle Crashers is coming early 2010 (really looking forward to this).

On Blu Ray there's less choice but don't forget the fantastic 2D fighting game BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger! The new KoF wasn't good however. If you really wanna go oldschool, the Megadrive Collection looks good (the whole series of Streets of Rage has been added).

And there's a lot more I'm forgetting.

Re: Ps3

I've got the old versions of SF on the PS2. MVC2 is cool.
Guilty Gear2XX is quite good as well, probably the pinnacle of the style for me up to now.

The oldschool compilations on the PS2 I mostly have.... but I'd like to get more modern 2D titles. Odin Sphere was quite amazing and I'm exceptionally pleased with Pattapon on the PSP for new-school 2D looks.

What mainly annoys me is that SHMUP's are only rarely released in EU. I need castle Shikigami3 and this is just frustrating;

Konami did Otomedius... there is no shortage of new 2d games but the ports just don't reach EU. Instead we get more FPS's, sandbox games and buckets of shovelware with wii controls bolted on.

The HD graphics in SSFIITHD are superb. For an oldschool 2D fighter fan it's a dream come true. And don't forget, all these 2D titles can now be played online!

If you really like GG, then you really should get Calamity Trigger. You probably know it's the successor of the GG series. It has had fantastic reviews. It hasn't come out in Europe yet, but will be out shortly.

There's tons of SHMUPS released on the PSN (downloadable titles), (I guess those are the ones I forgot) though they're mostly not classic 2D. Super Stardust HD is the most praised one (very good btw), and soon there will be Pixeljunk Shooter (true 2D, looks like a must buy). There's Soldner X in true HD with nice graphics.

And don't forget Trine; a platformer in 3D that plays 2D.

I think there's enough stuff to warrant a PS3 buy for oldschool gamers, definately if you look at the PSN-titles (which are pretty cheap btw).

Btw, a 2D Sonic (finally!) in HD has been announced for 2010.

Yeah, I tried that one on a friend's 360. I was quite pleased with it.

Actually, to my embarrassment I did not know that. I'll need to investigate. I did read that Odin Sphere got a sort of spiritual sequel. I'd like to see that one when it comes out.

But no Cave.. At least some Cave games ok run in mame.

I read that. It was about time! Rumours have it it will be fast again as well, Sonic Heroes was a embarrassment though I have to confess I did like Sega Superstar Tennis (technically SST cheated by featuring Space Channel 5, which I secretly love, don't tell anyone)

Dunno if it's out yet in EU, but if you use VISA, just use a USA account & put in a USA adress for your VISA (remember to put in a tax free state). It's a lot cheaper too.
