Topic: John Whitney - Animator, Video Artist

Just found out about this guy. Don't know much about him other than he worked with Kubrick on 2001. Really beautiful stuff...very warm and analog.

Any other fans?

big fan of whitney! was able to see Lapis on a huge screen with the room surrounded by speakers. the quality of the you tube video doesn't quite do justice to what you experience, but still pretty cool.

Re: John Whitney - Animator, Video Artist

finding this guy's work has set me off on a long tangent of early abstract animation.
Whitney is the best I've found so far, although I also really like Oskar Fischinger's stuff.

There's info about this kind of stuff here:

Anyway, dude used a self built analog computer made from an anti-aircraft missle...or something.

@metro-nome - I'll prolly hit up the Guggenheim on Firday for the early computer animation exhibit...I heard they'll be showing wall-sized youtube clips!

Re: John Whitney - Animator, Video Artist

yes, I plan to hit up the googlieheim on Friday!

I'm also going to speak with some friends I know who might have access to a big wall so we can puff up these youtube pictures real large, like wink
