that myspace for luciano...
are you going to japan aaron?
A few years ago I saw TLR and Bangkok Impact at Club Modulein Shibuya. Good stuff. (check the website for directions)
There's also Unit, but I've never been there, apparently kettle was playing there recently, so there might be some other interesting nights.
The best way to find out about parties is to go the records stores neferos wrote about, look for fliers and ask around, if you can find a clerk who speaks some english, you are set.
Yep, in only a few weeks away now! copped cheap tickets from Jetstar. Can't wait!
Thanks for those links Statiq.
I cant check Myspace at work but i'm sure I have luciano on my friendlist, will try and check it over the weekend (no internet at home atm waiting for it to be hooked back up -- a pain!)
luciano (DJ man from dyatron) only accepts add requests from people he/she knows. You must enter either luciano (DJ man from dyatron)'s last name or email address to
anyone got it? my friend is trying to add him so we can hit him up for gigs haha
Hey does any one know of any good parties happening in Tokyo between the 3rd and 7th of November?
Is anyone living there at the moment? Thanks
I went to Disk Union, that was awesome.. I bought UR - Final Frontier in mint cond. for $10 AU for example..
I went to Tokyo this summer, The Small Paradise italo disco record store is still there, tucked away somewhere in a small appartment building. Prices vary from good (I bought Psyko Flash from Talko for 20 euro) to insane (Fockewulf's Gitano was 430 euro The Shibuya area is still a good startingpoint, a lot of great shops can also be found around Shinjuku. I found good stuff in the Disk Union stores in all parts of the city. But the best record deals can be done in Shimokitazawa, 2 train stops from Shibuya, the area has a much more suburban feel and there are all sorts of vintage 50s, 60s and 70s stores the record shops are even better then in Tokyo centre eg. City Country City is a great shop with a really nice atmosphere, you can even have a healthy snack and the offer is amazing (I bought some rare Italo Disco and Goblin stuff). Overall I must say that Japanese recordshops are the best I've seen in the world, records are always clean, neatly packaged, all details put on a small label in the right corner, truly a joy to sift through. I returned from Japan with 32 records and I'm quite picky so that's says something about the offer. The Japanese have always had an eye for incorporating the best aspects of a foreign culture and the Western music culture is no exception, I found Italian produced records that are rarest of the rare in Europe but are just sitting on a shelf in Tokyo Truly a vinyl collector's paradise!
This guide helped alot in discovering the more interesting parts of japanese culture, it shows some record shops but also where to get your schoolgirl saliva and used panties Check http://noreaction.net/maps/tdr/
Some pics, the last ones are of the Five G Analog Synth store
Nice pics! I've never been to Five G, how are the prices?
Shimokitazawa: Unfortunately they're going to destroy & rebuild most of the area around the station. A lot of people fear this will completely change the place and ruin what's unique about Shimokitazawa. This is going to happen in 1 or 2 years. At least you enjoyed it while it was still there...
Glad you found the map useful. Steven from Tokyo Damage Report did the actual guide & discovered the places, I just google-nerd-them on a map
As far as I can remember the prices at Five G were ok, you could buy a pretty decent 808 for 150,000 yen. Shame to hear about the construction plans around Shimokitazawa but I guess Tokyo's expansion can't be stopped. Putting all Steven's places on a google map was real thoughtful, I wouldn't have found them without it, thanks!
Going back to Tokyo in April, if anyone is going to be there, message me, we'll hit the izakayas!
Wish I could but my relatives moved to Hong Kong Have a good one! Let me know if shimokitazawa is still there
Im going to Tokyo 2-12th July, any tips for what to see? Is there anything electro related happening during that time?
Also, does anyone know about a cheap hostel at a good location? And is there prepaid sim cards that i can buy for my phone with a good datarate, for surfing, using google maps and sending mail with, not for calling.

Cheapest hostels when i went were in Asakusa, which is north east and a bit of a trek from the action, but the trains get going promptly at 6 from memory so not such an issue if your out. Someone told me about one in shinjuku which is right in the action which might be worth investigating.
Recommend Bar Jam in Ebisu, a super cool bar not up itself either. BEST BAR SOUNDSYSTEM EVER, total audio porn i had to take pictures of the speakers they were so good.
Records...expensive. Worth digging for japanese only releases i guess and japanese jazz stuff i guess. No shortage of YMO albums either.
Shimokitanazawa is great, highly recommend going there.
hello,
I will visit Tokyo in a couple of weeks. I remember reading somewhere on the WWW that most ATMs won't accept foreign cards. Also I heard that the few ATMs where you can withdraw money using a foreign card are located at post offices. Are these two nuggets of information true or total nonsense?
Just planning ahead and want to be sure about where I can withdraw cash when needed.

Hey David,
You should check with your bank which ATMs you can use, I could only go to the ATMs of Citibank (wasn't in a p.o. though). Once you know which bank/ATM takes your card you are fine, I stayed in Shibuya and I had two Citibanks in walking distance of my place so it was never a real problem. Also bring your Visa, this is accepted almost anywhere
Your Visa should work at most places but i had problems at train stations with my card, i couldnt figure out where to insert the card and the interface was not in english, i used atm at a post office, a white sign with a red T with a bar on top if is the post office logo, they can be found at unexpected places, the one at shibuya is on the top floor of the Tokyu department store. Visa worked in all stores i was at, some restaurants wont accept it though so bring some cash with you.
Other things to see in Tokyo is the Miraikan, the best museum ive been to. If you are intrested in robotics go to Akihabara and find a store called Tsukumo, there are several so look for the one that says robot.
Cirrus/Maestro EFTPOS works at all 7 Elevens..
I didn't have a problem.
^^ the botlords are laughing
back on topic...
i've just been offered a job in tokyo (not teaching) and i'm in two minds about it. the job itself is not the worry but more the acclimatization as it were to the city itself. i'd like to hear from any robots who have lived or are currently living in tokyo about their experiences. i realize that integration is a lengthy process and never fully achieved but this is a once off chance. any input welcome.
Unfortunately I never lived in Tokio but my sis and several of my friends do and I don't hear them complaining Like you said yourself it's the chance of a lifetime and I would definetly go for it! Summing up Tokio in one sentence is hard but I would say it's the city that offers everything you would ever want or need and more except for pot Every possible subculture is represented in every way be it in music (record stores (read above), clubs), food (no other city in the world has more michelin star restaurants, all different kitchens can be found Japanese, Moroccan, Korean, Italian, French, Jamaican, Greek, Chinese to name but a few), clothes (from real expensive haute couture to cheap vintage second hand stores), entertainment (movie theaters, opera, drama, etc. both Western and Eastern culture can be seen). The city is really clean, there is no violence or crime (my sis lost her wallet once and it was returned 30 min later by the finder who brought it to her office people are so polite and treat everything with respect which makes you do the same... Tokio combines a Western metropolitan city with Japanese esthetics and accompanying philosophy so you feel at home no matter where you come from. Only one bad thing and that's the price you pay for an appartment, prices are high and living space is small but with so many good restaurants you won't be home a lot and who knows you might find a good deal. Let us know once you're there
the pot isn't exactly a deal breaker for me . i'm curious as to why it's difficult to get, is it because of harsh punishment?
i'm definitely warming to the place the more i learn about it though. that story about the lost wallet is such a reassuring culture trait and the one negative remark you made isn't even one i have to worry about seeing as accommodation is provided with the job . i know this can have it's drawbacks in terms of independence and flexibility so i'll have to investigate that a bit further.
so, next step is to start learning the kanji and surrounding myself with nihongo. cheers for the commentary
Pot is hard to find since a couple of sumo wrestlers got caught a few years back, nothing in Japan is illegal as long as it can't be seen by the public eye (eg. the hentai comics and movies) but as soon as someone as highranking as a sumo wrestler gets caught things change, a few years back you could find pot quite easily but since the wrestler incident they really cracked down on it. But as said before, Tokio is very safe, when I was there I saw a homeless guy picking up a mobile phone of a bench, he immediatly dials a relative of the owner and tells him he's going to leave the phone in a nearby policestation
