Topic: Is the LP format dying?

I've been reading here and there in the last months that the tendency towards purchasing single tracks at download stores is starting to make the concept "album" (=LP) obsolete.

Certainly we are in a niche market here which follows different rules, but the overall tendency is there in mainstream music at least.

What do you think? Will us electronic music fans manage to keep the album format with its high production costs (talking about 2x12", gatefold sleeves, multi color print jobs etc.) alive, even with limited runs of only a couple hundred copies?

Personally, I really love the  single LP format with 16-22 Minutes per side). Although audio quality suffers a bit from softer volume levels, it still is a very sexy format to me. (My favorites in this format: Mandroid - Electro Freaks Rehab clinic, Squarepusher - Just a Souvenir, Martial Canterel - Confusing outsides.)

Re: Is the LP format dying?

Not even the Dj-community likes the LP, 12" singles are always preferred.

No, according to music industry reports, the amount of new LPs being sold in the rock/alternative market is growing.

Re: Is the LP format dying?

indie nerds are starting to love albums on vinyl again ...

but another problem is imo that a whole LP is often boring - especially when it comes to electronica.

one example:

Sally Saphiro: many nice single tracks, but to listen to the whole album is boring ...

i hate soccer

That album gets played a lot over here (on cd) & even the wife even likes it.

Honey, in the morning the bees are singing and the birds are stinging in an open head surgery.

Re: Is the LP format dying?

Btw: I was in the Virgin Record Store in Rennes (France) last week and to my surprise (as it's a big commercial store) they had a lot of vinyl LPs (indie/rock/metal/electronic/funk/soul...).

dude i saw that too the other day!!

I couldn't believe my eyes... didn't bother to browse though, my guess the selection is as mainstream as possible. Can't imagine it makes up any noticable proportion of the revenue for MM

Re: Is the LP format dying?

thats because indie is now mainstream.
the kids are thinking stuff like mando diao or the kaiser chiefs is hardcore underground big_smile

Re: Is the LP format dying?

I like an LP. Would prefer releasing another one instead of 4 records with 2 songs.

Re: Is the LP format dying?

I thought you prefer not releasing music? wink

Re: Is the LP format dying?

Lp's are for home listening. Maxi for mixing.

Yeah, Mediamarkt and Saturn have returned to vinyl.
They even have stuff like squarepusher, harmonic 313 and modeselektor.

I'll inform the media.

Check it homies: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/ … age_of_mp3

Not just because of reading that article but I think vinyl is gaining popularity again. And moreso for non-DJs! Radiohead releasing In Rainbows on vinyl (and making it a great package to boot!) and making it available at nearly all the Urban Outfitters stores and with the proliferation of turntables I think things are looking on the up for vinyl and the LP.

Do it your way, because everyone else is just weird.

it's just a fashion thing

@ Communicator
"and making it a great package to boot!"
-> i noticed that too... artists are taking more care of the covers again. that's nice!

Re: Is the LP format dying?

we just released our full length via vinyl, but we decided to spend the extra to press CD's w/ inserts so people can have an "on-the-go" copy when they buy it. the silkscreen poster was limited to the first 100 pressings.

i really dig vinyl "coming back" and i am a big fan of both the single and also the LP. There's just something cool about hearing an artist create a full length that has a vibe to it, it's an art form all to itself imo.
