Topic: Earplugs

Robot pals,

I think I'm getting old and need to start wearing earplugs. At BLOC weekend I nearly busted a drum and was drunkenly thinking, I don't know if this is worth losing my hearing for (this was during Ben Sims and Surgeon).

Am looking for recomendations. Don't think I'm quite ready for the super-expensive ones. Any other options?

Re: Earplugs

Go for Elacin, Ive only heard good things about their lower priced stuff. Ive got the er-15's (the super-expensive ones) and must say that they are well worth more than what they cost me. cant put a price on your hearing and all that shite.

I stick them in about 40 minutes before entering a club, then they are nice and comfortable by the time it starts getting loud. unlike conventional

Re: Earplugs

Lately i have been wearing a sort of moldable silly-putty-ishy earplugs, they suck. You don't understand shit of what people say to you and music sounds distorted. They do prevent the after party ringing though.

I also have been experimenting with cigarette filters. They work more or less, but avoid menthols at all costs.

I'm still looking to buy proper ones.

Re: Earplugs

Right, I guess I should do searches before I post topics but I like the negative attention I get when I don't.

Thanks for the tips, meschi.

And Mr. Maximal, I never understand what anyone says to me anyway. Maybe the putty would be a good excuse.

Then go for it, their cheap and their pillow soft! http://www.macksearplugs.com/pillow_sof … rplugs.htm

And I'll remember to blare in your ear a little harder next party.

Re: Earplugs

I bought my ER-20 from http://hearforlife.co.uk/ . They cost around 8,50

Re: Earplugs

Elacin earplugs are great. Got the ER-9 for bars and ER-25 for the really loud environments. Can actually make  better conversation with those in.

make love to me with your lasergun

Re: Earplugs

Thanks for posting all this info! i've been in search of decent protection that won't cut all the top end off of our shows. we just added a drummer to our band and we've done 3 shows where i had to basically stand right over his crash cymbal and i usually never wear earplugs...

worship the potentiometer.

Re: Earplugs

my impression after a bit of reading and talking to an expert is that the foam-type plugs actually provide the best protection, but at the cost of shitty sound because they have a low-pass characteristic (with >10 dB attenuation difference between subbands). The "hi-fi" type plugs sacrifice some attenuation for a more or less flat frequency response.

My take on it so far has been to err on the safe side and live with the shitty sound. Especially since hearing loss usually starts with the high frequencies, I rather put all the attenuation I can get on the highs. On the German market, I've found Hansaplast plugs the most comfortable and effective, plus they even got a lot cheaper recently if I'm not mistaken.

Of course the choice of earplugs is also a function of how sensitive one's ears react to noise. As a musician, shitty sound is hardly tolerable. But for me as a consumer, I usually am more concerned about the DJ putting on good records, rather than caring about a slightly muffled sound.

Re: Earplugs

I just got home from a trip to the Eye and Ear Hospital yesterday because of problems I have been having with my ears. I'm getting musicians earplugs fitted with a -15dB reduction, they cost about $200 AUD. Trust me, get the best earplugs you can, it's not worth the pain & fustration.

Music is a beautiful opiate, if you don't take it too seriously.

Re: Earplugs

These ones are pretty affordable and popular, they feel like they work better than the foam ones although I'm not an audiologist so can't say for sure:

Re: Earplugs

Okay, I ordered some of the cheapos, and if I start feeling younger, I'll get the fitted ones. Thanks for all of the suggestions and letting me commandeer my own thread about it!

Re: Earplugs

Anybody knows earplugs that can reduce extreme noise, like the noise of low flying aircraft (military)?

I live in an area where they fly airforce exercises between May and September; almost daily around 7 am they cross my area and the noise is terrible. i have got kinda waxplugs, but the noise still comes through so that i always wake up sad

Reality is just a simulation

Re: Earplugs

i have earplugs (Variphone) for +- 4 months, and i'm very happy with them (-15 db filter). important to know (and a lot of people forget that), is the fact that also the audience is less loud, so the difference between the music volume and the audience volume remains the same.
