Topic: MP3 Players
I think its time that I join the 21st Century.
I'd like to purchase a portable digital music player.
Are there any that play MIDI files? I really like listening to them (plus they don't take up much room).

Quite a perverted taste you have, Bankie.
hahahahaha
"time to join 21st century and listen to my midi files on a portable player" LOL
Doesn't every mobile phone play mp3's and midi files nowadays?
i reckon so, but the head phone port on my phone is pretty whack... smaller than 1/8" and only sends out mono.
Need stereo midi
so you need a MonoMidiP3Player.....lets google
Pick any player on which rockbox (a custom open source firmware) can be installed.
There are quite a few:
http://www.rockbox.org/download/
It does a bunch of other stuff (lots of formats are supported: FLAC etc., Gapless playback, there's even a Game Boy emulator for it...)

I don't think there's anything like it around. Apple are just being assholes by making it impossible for people to install alternate firmware on their most recent ipods (apple encrypt firmwares for that specific reason - typical corporate control freak bullshit).
Yeah Steve really fooked us on that and alot of other things.
Maybe i'll get something like sandisk fuze or a cowon s9
both are very flexible in regards to file formats.
sony walkman. i compared a bunch of those mp3 things a few months ago, and this one came out best. especially the sound is very good, and no itunes shit like with those apple things.
cowon iaudio; awesome sound, great and durable design..
sony walkman gets my vote too
i got rockbox on my ipod...dont know about midi files but you can play doom...so, you know, pretty sweet.
Problem with sony walkman is that there's not enough memory (only 8 or 16 gig) and it doesn't read SD cards so there's no way to expand beyond that.
Another annoyance is that it uses MTP for file transfer. This means that a simple, "plug - drag and drop" is not possible. You can't use it as a regular drive (like a USB flash drive), Windows Media Player 10 or some other shitty itunes-like software is required.
But other that than it looks & sounds good, and the 30+ hours battery is nice (although most recent cowon/iaudio models have 50+ hours battery).
i liked using rockbox on my nano, it gives you a lot more control of the sound with many, many eq settings.

same here on the 3nd generation regular ipod. sweet. doom in black and white.
so get yourself a decent second had ipod, 3rd or 4th generation, swap the hard drive for a flash drive if it dies on you and enjoy.

the mtp point is not true. i just plug mine into the usb port of my pc, it shows up as a drive and i can drag and drop away. when you unplug it, it updates its library and youre good to go. no mediaplayers come into the picture.
mine has only 4 gigs but for me thats more than enough.. i dont mind reloading it, i dont use it that much anyway..
and that battery is really superb, i've had it since october and other than the few times its been hooked up via usb for a few minutes, i've only had to recharge it once.. it keeps a charge like nothing i've ever seen..

Didn't know about that... you made me google that stuff.
Apparently the walkman series is MTP by default but you may force your OS to use it like a regular USB/MSC drive by fiddling with drivers. I don't know if this works for all walkman players though.
And if you're using Mac OSX it seems to show up as a removable drive by default because MTP is not supported. (I guess you're a mac user rude??)
Still if you can use them as a regular drive that makes sony walkman a lot more interesting, the only issue I'd have with them would be the size.
I have the Sony NWZA818 mp3 player, 8GB of memory and as Rude says a very simplistic plug in via USB then drag and drop your files, its piss easy. 8GB is fine for me, got loads of mixes on mine with loads of memory spare, its great with the MP4 (video format ??) but I' ve not downloaded any video to it as yet.
no mac user here, pc only. and i didn't have to force anything or install anything.. it just popped up in my list of drives..
