robots and robettes. Its my day off on Friday and I'm going to bake a cake. Ive never baked a cake before and really like the idea of baking something myself. I have a nice carrot cake in mind but may be swayed if anyone has any decent recipes. Im open to any kind of cake. ANYTHING.

I love cake. smile

Re: Baking Cakes

Fruit Loaf

1 Cup Water
1 Cup Suger
2 Cups Self Raising Flour
1 Large Egg(Beaten)
1 Cup Mixed Fruit(Sultanas, or whatever)
4 oz Margarine
1 Tsp Bicarb Soda

Put Water, fruit, sugar, marg and bicarb soda into a med. saucepan. Bring to the boil & simmer for 15min, until thick & brown.
Allow to cool slighty, beat in flour & egg.
Put into a lined loaf tin.
Cook at 190C for about an hour, probe with a skewer...if it comes out clean it;s done(and maybe cover the top with tinfoil if it's getting too burnt)

Wat makes this soo great is the simmering of the fruit etc before u bake.....brings out the natural sugars, & give the cake a sticky, moreish quality

let it cool before u cut it(difficult to slice when its hot).....serve a slice buttered, with a nice cuppa.

my mom is the Master...really smile
wish you luck Meschi.

Re: Baking Cakes

trust me on this one....

preheat oven to 150C

300g dark chocolate
300g butter
300g caster sugar

melt choc and butter on low heat and stir in sugar and set aside....

beat 8 eggs (that's right, 8!) and stir into the warm mix.

finally add 8 rounded (same above and below rim of spoon) tablespoons of plain flour and some vanilla extract and mix it all in..

brush a round deep cake tin with melted butter and coat the butter with cocoa powder making sure to shake out the excess powder.

pour in the mix and bake in the oven for about 45 minutes. it will appear sort of jelly like in the middle when it's done.

allow to rest for a few minutes then turn it out on a plate by placing the plate on top of the tin first as it will still be far from solid in the middle.

let it cool completely then into the fridge for 4 - 24 hours.... i'll leave out the decorating part.
it does need to be cold as it needs to set.

the rest you will thank me for i'm certain wink

Re: Baking Cakes

According to the John Gresham-esque McVities vs HMRC (1991) the difference between cakes and biscuits can be tested by the following method...

a cake starts off soft and goes hard when it is stale, but a biscuit starts off hard and goes soft when stale

...I haven't a clue what Millionaire Shortbread does... maybe it's a whole new genus?

Re: Baking Cakes

that was the famous jaffa cake tax evasion case wasn't it... stuff of folklore that one.
