If you put the speakers where your window is, which would make more sense, you should get a heavier curtain.

Thanks Erroraudio, now all I need is to readjust the tape deck so it will stop chewing tape and may be also a better quality microphone

it's modular, you get the parts you need to build up your frankenstain. you can get tilted brackets to mount the shelves like that

I'm considering redoing a part of my studio, but looking at your Cimabot studio I'm tempted to redo it completely... It really looks extremely nice set up like that man, and I get the idea it's much more user friendly than my own current set-up...
Btw... The main reason I want to change things is because I have a different mixer (for over a year) than I had when I build my studio and it starts to annoy me that I can't properly reach it from the back. Anybody got any advice on what a desk should look like? Like links to sites that manufacture studio desks? I won't be buying but building and I could use some inspiration...

Thanks! Yeah it's cool to have stuff on shelves, especially if you can walk at the back of it as you please. In my case I always have to pull the whole thing towards me before I can access the back, and that's because I am pushed in a corner in an open space flat. My mixing desk is rather small, 24 channels but still very compact, I could fit it on this desk extension this ikea table has. I would think being able to walk behind any equipment is always a massive plus, especially a mixer. That makes you loose room but it's great for non-hard-wired studios... I never had a big desk so I'm afraid I haven't got useful suggestions... but yeah, I have had this Ikea Broder thing for over a year now and I can go back when I need one more shelf or an extension and it's really cheap and seems to be cut-to-size!

@ brian - you have a pretty large desk now, don't you?
do you remember my setup from when you stayed in sydney a few years ago? I use two 18U high aluminum racks side by side to sit my mixing desk on, then monitors sit on a little shelf I made to sit on the meter bridge...
but at 18U they're really a bit too high for using when sitting down at the PC...
need less rack gear, so i can cut the racks down to about 14u, or so.... maybe even 12u.

I really recommend having the mixing desk about 1m out from the wall though, if you can afford the space. it's so nice to have access to the back of the desk and the back of the racks.
Yeah I remember your set-up, I think I even have a picture of it somewhere. I'm not sure if I want rack space underneath the mixer. I don't have much rack equipment yet and I think it would be uncomfortable to have it on the floor. For amps and psu's it's fine, but effects and stuff I'd rather have on working height. But being able to reach racks from the back is also very tempting... I do have enough space in terms of room depth so I'm thinking about putting the mixer 75cm or 100 into the room. Only thing I wonder is, how will it affect the sound if I put both the mixer and the speakers 1 meter from the wall?
Right now my mixer is also too high which is indeed uncomfortable. My mixer is semi modular so I'm gonna see whether it's possible to make a desk with a frame for it. I thought about putting it on wheels, but I doubt whether that's smart because it would require even longer cable's.
This weekend I'm gonna draw a plan, it will help me get a better idea of the whole situation.
yeah - racks under the desk is a tradeoff... would prefer them somewhere else, but don't have another 21" of space next to anything... :-)
the first 6-8 spaces work ok for me in my setup, but yeah thats the reason I am still with 18u racks.. if I cut them down, those top spaces would be a lot lower, so the desk would be more usable sitting down , and the racks less usable in general.
I think speakers sound better about 1m from the wall. thats the main reason everything else (desks and racks) came out there in my studio. once I hooked them up out from the wall though, I totally fell in love with the idea and I never want racks or mixer against a wall ever again.
one cool thing to try for a studio setup, I read in mixing with your mind (website for the book at http://mixingwithyourmind.com/ - highly recommended!!) basically you start with an empty room, an assistant, and amp and a speaker, and a sound source like a CD player or something... then you get your assistant to move around the room with the speaker while you sit in the middle, in your studio chair, and pick the spots (3d space!) where the speaker sounds most accurate and the music sounds clearest. then you have the best positions for speaker placement picked, and you arrange the rest of the studio so you get to sit in the middle, and the speakers get to sit in two of the sweet spots you discovered.
Afterall - the most important thing in your studio is you - followed by your two speakers that let you hear what you are doing - Everything else then fits in around those 3 most important things.

Yeah I suppose it will all make "a difference".... But gear placement won't change the fundamental aspects of your room.
By all means, place large absorptive things before doing the test (like, say, a lounge that might act a bit like a bass trap) if you really care to - I still don't think even that will make much difference. All most music gear is going to do is break up ringing and flutter echo a bit.
