I always liked this painting hanging in the National gallery in London.
apparently Ingres was not keen on making portraits but when he met madame moitessier he quickly changed his mind. notice he even paints her twice in the same portrait.
I heard a story also that when he was painting the dress he couldn't get satisfied with it and repeatedly painted over and over untill he eventually broke down into tears, and madame moitessier got off her chair walked over to him and said " there, there, jean auguste dominique. be patient, dont worry, you will finish it" then he started again and painted it perfectly first time.

And Alma Tadema

http://www.humanitiesweb.org/gallery/0/1.jpg

This painting was inspired by Heliogabalus (or Elagabalus) a Roman emperor of the 3rd century. Most decadent of all the emperors (seen in copper silk), legend has it that he once staged an orgy in which the participants were smothered to death in a cascade of rose petals. This painting depicts the decorously garbed women, floundering in the petals while the emperor dispassionately toasts their fate.
Alma-Tadema had fresh roses brought in from France every week so that every one of the (more than 2,000) petals could be accurately depicted.

These are really really nice, cheers for this post Godspill!

Re: Not-Contemporary art thread!

@fantomas wow thanks for posting!  gives me some very fond memories smile
i find something very appealing about those kinds of art school drawings. maybe its just nostalgia.
I'm interested as to wether those first three drawings are by different people or the same person. seems like a similar drawing style.
I also wonder if the person who made the portrait likes the work of Frank Auerbach, I think they might wink
You must love what you do , i hope i'll be doing it soon too.

Re: Not-Contemporary art thread!

yes, same person ( 16 years old )...i'll let her know about Auerbach.
