Topic: Neuton Insolvency

Surprised that I can't find word of it here already - nothing comes up in a search...
Seems some very sad news today:

Neuton insolvency

A FOEM contact has told us today about a rumour (edit: it is no rumour anymore now) that Neuton, one of the biggest music distributors, would be due to announce its insolvency on Monday, December 1, 2008. Original text:

Re: Neuton Insolvency

Oh man. I just heard the rumour some weeks ago. Now it`s official. Shit. It is/was our main distribution and they owe us a lot of money... sad

Re: Neuton Insolvency

i try to translate the most important things from the text below, which is from claus bachor to make some things more clear:
dont mix up insolvency and bankrupt.
cisco distribution IS bankrupt, and afaik they owe neuton a lot of money, and neuton has problems now, because they have a lack of money, as cisco buys a huge amount of records from them. in german law a GmbH (similar to a ltd) have to place a insolvency application if the possibillity is given that they cant pay their dues. It is a punishable offence if they dont do it.

Re: Neuton Insolvency

Thanks elec. Now it is clearer. If they don`t get back to a normal level, they will be dead in march 2009, right? mmh.

btw, your post shows some parts of the letter in double.

Re: Neuton Insolvency

damn, those are very bad news for the vinyl records industry...I hope they aren't bankrupt & they'll find a solution.
I can already count vinyl distros on the fingers of my hands, so if Neuton disappear, I don't what will happen...

...but what came first ?

a) capitalistic industry actually is a bankrupt machine
b) christian vogel is finally right and all music came to an end
c) everything will be tired out quite soon

Re: Neuton Insolvency

off topic but "all music comes to an end" on tresor is a great album, certainly was auspicious of dark times. not sure what vogel's doing now, i remember some activity with raise robots raise collective/project/label or whatever it was...

Re: Neuton Insolvency

yeah that sounds bad, they're dropping like flies sad
at least there are many small labels that are very charming and true to the game,
that's the good side of today's business
(no it's not always about biz)
but if the advantages of some major distributors aren't available anymore it's getting
really hard..

Re: Neuton Insolvency

whhooah, 500 releases for a major distributor, that's insane and shows today's reality.
in comparison, in the beginning of the 90s even primitive techno releases had issues of 10.000 and more;
and some of us are not alone with "release problems".

but while private pressings are far more flexible to handle, it's totally clear that
a big distributor/record company can't go on with average quantities of 500-2000..

anyway, none of these facts will ever convince me of "collecting" or "disc"jockeying mp3..

Same with me !!! Sad story with all these institutions fading away, but I won't buy mp3 or use digital mixing, that's for sure. I own some records, so I will have to concentrate on them, in case there won't be any vinyl (that I don't believe).

Re: Neuton Insolvency

there will definitely be a time when vinyl manufacturing stops. Hopefully it's a long way off, but these are bad times for lots of industries.

"When young adult music beginners are forced to resort to acts such as Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams or the Rolling Stones, in other words the music that their fathers or grandfathers were listening to in their youth, this says a lot about the absence of innovation. As a result, interest in music as a whole is continuing to decline," says Kai Fraeger, adding that this is being exacerbated by some companies' insufficient capital resources, amateurish management qualities and dubious business models.

this paragraph seems to sum things up, but also seems like it might have been a cyclicle thing. If labels/ distributoirs whatver took more risks, things would be better?

Re: Neuton Insolvency

maybe there will be only a few small distributions for vinyl in the future. Most big distros dealing with the mp3 already. So, small labels will live on direct sales beside the mp3 deals with distributions. That

Re: Neuton Insolvency

yes, who knows. i have no clue what is coming. Combination of small vinyl editions and some mp3 sales might work for a while. Although it is harder without distro and everything goes slower, the do-it-yourself thing has the advantage that no further unit makes profit between label and recordstore and label and recordstores and record-collectors are in direct touch. But we can't handle more than 1 release per year this way, but that is fine with us anyway.

Btw, in our city and in Munich the biggest 2nd hand vinyl stores got more and more customers lately and had to move to a bigger shop. So, it is not a death on all fronts for vinyl.

Reality is just a simulation

Re: Neuton Insolvency

I see it in berlin too. Second Hand shops make the profits. I wonder how many are opened the last few years. it works...

Re: Neuton Insolvency

also in Denmark there has been quite a media interest in vinyl lately. Like broadcasts from record fairs in the news and famous musician talks about there passion for vinyl etc. etc. I have a little hope that the trend of buying a physical product will raise in the future.

Re: Neuton Insolvency

sad story is that even some people which are highly respected in the scene are forcing now the death of vinyl - maybe just to push their own mp3 or whatever business i dont know...
i mean what an asshole is Richie Hawtin: he is now telling everywhere how "unmodern" vinyl is and what kind of bad "oil products" this records are ...
what the fuck?
Mr Hawtin is pretending now to be interested in pollution control?
Of all things Richie Hawtin who is well known of taking fucking designer drugs and using airplanes the whole time just to get from berlin to munich and stuff?
fuck off...
