Hehe, there are lots of games like Shadow of the Beast that you only remember for its graphics, the game themselves where pretty much crap ..
I mean, the fucking stones you had to jump over in last ninja, how much did that suck .. But who can argue with the last ninja music?
the parallax scrolling was pretty awesome on the c64 re shadow of the beast

Another World
Speedball
Honorable mention: Pinball Fantasies. Not really a great game, but I played it for months in a row with a friend whose Amiga 1200 keyboard was broken (from hitting it too much out of frustration with Another World) and this was the only game we could still play. We got so good at it that we won an Amiga CD32 at some Amiga fair, where we had to play the game jumping around on a big floor controller
Pinball Fantasies; was that the one with the Graveyard in it?
No I think that was Pinball Dreams, the first installment of the Pinball games. I believe Pinball Fantasies had a Ghost House theme. Or perhaps I mix the two up, I don't really remember.
Still re-playing all the LucasArts Adventures from time to time with scummvm. Never gets boring.

Speaking of Lucas games...
simon the sorceror
Didn't that have something to do with Monkey Island? I don't recall ever playing it
how could i forget speedball

Well I was hooked on the Graveyard machine for months in a row. All night long.
@brian
simon the sorceror was one of a slew of point and click games that owed a sort of debt of inspiration to the lucasarts series.... i'm not sure if it used the scumm engine, but it was pretty much monkey island (likeable yet incompetent hero saves the world) with a fantasy setting and a sort of "typically british" sense of humour. the puzzles were mostly funny and there were a lot of great details which make these games great. the sequels pretty much sucked.
Everyone here is talking about Amiga games!!! C64 deserves a topic on its own...
Anyway I play Wizball on c64 from time to time and it's one of the greatest game ever.

Yep, spent a looong time playing C64 Wizball as a teenager, a real classic.
Also this one (Maniac Mansion):
I remember being amazed by how much freedom the player was given.
Creatures was good too.. but damned frustrating:
Holy shit. No one here played Moonstone? I think that was the game, along with Cannon Fodder, Wings, Settlers and Civilization that had me planted by the amiga all of my waking hours. All you do is travel the land, fight different beasts in different settings, buy equipment, fight more shit, fight dragons and sometimes other knights... it's awesome!
sword of sharpness ftw!
Anyone remember these Amiga games:
B.A.T. (maybe B.A.T. 2?)
Another World
The Chaos Engine
... What about "Beneath a steel sky" ? ;D
