Topic: Setting up a stream yourself?

So how difficult is it to set up a stream yourself?

I was thinking about this from the community angle: if the robots can set up a number of small streams with their selected content, we could even out the need for bandwith. All of the servers wouldn't need to be up 24/7, but with large numbers there would always be some of them online, and they could be publicized here on the forum or in a RSS feed.

Transmitting this way has benefits over podcasting and downloads. You could just insert number of addresses into VLCs playlist and it would skip the unactive ones. This way a lot of music that's confined on hard drives would be sent out. It's not meant to replace CBS main transmission, but to activate a swarm of low bandwith streams.

We've done the odd rogue transmission before, and will certainly post if we're gonna do so again...fuelled by radio silence, gotta take matters into our own hands!

A stream server is easy to setup nowdays. I might be able to host a relay if some "cbs like" station raise from here.

But maybe we can have a look to the p2p streaming radios technologies, would be nice : http://www.peercast.org/

.. the problem is simultaneous connection... a normal DSL can have some like 4-5 streams at 96kbits... unless some of you guys have incredible
bandwidth.... the CBS was running on a streaming service provider, which costs some money...

Alex: That's why we should try to set up a swarm of streams, with maybe connection caps as low as 4-5 you mentioned, but so many robots streaming that there would always be something on.

yes, but there has to be a mechanism where a "master" stream is selected and that at least one stream of the main server gets relayed to
another server, which on its own dedicates another stream for another relay and so on and so on...
maybe the option for some people with lot of bandwidth to distribute to more than one server...

Alex: I was actually thinking that each transmitting robot would create their own programming instead of there being one master stream. Bring out your rare mp3s! And nothing prevents you from hooking up the decks and a mixer into the computer. Or generating your own jingles...

Ok, then I have all the needed knowledge for that, but it would be nice if there was a way to "collate" all the streams and have them relayed
around... I'll try to think about something.

Is it possible to setup a central stream, and then allocate particular time to members who want to upload a broadcast to that stream?

Whoever wants to broadcast, can book and arrange a time and date...

100 MBps, unlimited traffic servers only cost something like 20
