Topic: Musical highlights in 2023

It's that time of the year again. Must say that I haven't been buying as much new music as I used to, especially when it comes to electronic music or dancefloor focussed sounds.. Nevertheless I compiled these list. Curious to see yours and find out what good stuff I missed!

Ten favorite albums, in no particular order:
Craven Faults - Standers
Rose City Band - Garden Party
The Necks - Travel
Liturgy - 93696
Blur - The Ballad Of Darren
Carlos Niño & Friends - (I'm Just) Chillin', On Fire
Kahil El'Zabar's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble* Ft Dwight Trible & David Ornette Cherry - Spirit Gatherer • Tribute To Don Cherry
Grails - Anches En Maat
Panda Bear & Sonic Boom - Reset In Dub
The Holy Family - Go Zero

Five favorite reissues or compilations:
NRSB-11 - Commodified
Jon Hassell - Further Fictions
Karate - Complete Studio Recordings
Arthur Baker - Dance Masters: Arthur Baker (The Classic Dance Remixes)
The Connection Machine - BlackHole+

Dunno if anyone here uses Spotify but I compiled a playlist with one track per released, put into order to create a mixtape feel. Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3eWn7 … daed8047d6

Re: Musical highlights in 2023

Lots of good stuff JS, more 'regular music' (not disco) than i expected.

For me it have been mostly Metal, again. It's a real blast to discover a completely on my behalf overlooked genre. Some of my favourite have been

Merciless - The Awakening
Sadus - Illusions
Morbid Saint - Spectrum of Death
Bathory & Kreators early albums and much much more...
Awesume show on NTS - https://www.nts.live/shows/midnite-madness

Other than that - IFM of cource and https://soundcloud.com/darkerthanwax-radio

Re: Musical highlights in 2023

Aw man I get worse at this every year, I think it's because I don't really buy music anymore...just consume it via YouTube, Spotify..

Unfortunately as I use Spotify to sleep my favourite artist of the year are whale noises, and rainforest sounds. big_smile So anything I do actually listen to gets lost...

I did apparently listen to a lot of Aleksi Perälä and VC-118A though.... according to Spotify.

Yeah, i listenend to shitloads of disco, italo, freestyle, miami bass, early house and old school hiphop, etc. etc. but I only listed albums, reissues and compilations released in 2023 so that excludes a lot of that type of sounds (besides the excellent Arthur Baker compilation with an amazing booklet). For older music, this year I listenend to more 80s than 90s stuff I think.. Although my most played older album has been Alice In Chains' Dirt I think big_smile

I must say that 2023 has been a year that also reintroduced metal in my music menu. I enjoyed your Stormbringer compilations, and already bought some teenage speed and trash metal classics because my oldest daughter wen through a short but intense metal phase, but this year I also enjoyed some contemporary albums, be it in the more arty farty metal corner.. Liturgy was a highlight, as well as Bell Witch.. Went to both of their live shows when they were in NL and was not disappointed. I found Liturgy's show especially strong.. Basically it is straight up noise rock pretending to be black metal.

This week I ordered a (relatively) new Death Metal album by Blood Incantation. Maybe you like it too, although it is way more proggy than trashy, really.

Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement - Killer Whale Atmospheres

Dominick Fernow(aka Vatican Shadow and more) did release some absolutely "killer" albums under his RSE guise,

Think I posted last year about this, but its a label I keep returning to for zen atmospheres..

Re: Musical highlights in 2023

I see. I got an image in my head off you DB falling asleep to stuff like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8MQTAYqa9g

Which would have been freaking awesome (and far better than falling asleep listening to political pods while grinding teeth in resentment and anger over the state of your country and the state of the world.) Your not in to meditation are you? Got a depression a couple years and got (beside happy-pills) meditation prescribed.

Ok, it's the same for me as for DumbBot, a bit hard to keep track of releases when it's mostly (only) streamed and SoulSeek. Yeah i noted Liturgy on your Spotify list, listening to a band live sure can get you hooked. (For me living way out in the countryside its only spontaneous banjo gatherings these days...)

Glad to hear you liked the Stormbringer mixes, I made i mix for this year IFM Halloween special, wasn't sure folks would like it but it seemed people did... You should make a mix yourself? or a 30 min split together?

Not sure why i suddenly got a taste for metal, perhaps some 80's horror soundtrack connected the dots. There is often a sense of self-awareness and humor i quite like and a bit rough around the edges 80 cassette vibe in some of the stuff. Many of the home drawn covers are so nice.

Blood Incantation, yes i might, i have only dipped my toes in Death Metal and the other subgenre.
Must be great to have a kid to share your music interest with!

(Alice In Chains, man that's poco-loco, 90 was such an awful decade.)
