Topic: Horror Disco, Dark Techno, Electronic OSTs in the 90s

I'm working on a project. years 1979-1989 are done. years 1999-2009 are done. But I'm stuck when it comes to the bulk of the 90s when it comes to synthesizer dance. I've got the obvious ones (I think anyway. i.e. Aphex, NIN, Octagon Man, (bits of) Plastikman)

In the 90s a lot of Horror OSTs lost the dancey, italo / disco sound in favor of metal and compilations (those music from and inspired by albums)

But I'm convinced that the influence of Carpenter Et Al carried on in some form, or at least that there is atmospheric, dark stuff out there that carried on the legacy before the (moderately) big resurgence we're experiencing now.

I spent the majority of the 90s listening to The Jesus Lizard and drinking cider, but maybe you weren't. If anything comes to mind please share, you'd be helping a lot

Re: Horror Disco, Dark Techno, Electronic OSTs in the 90s

Does it have to be horror OSTs? And disco/synth oriented? There's a lot of stuff from nineties which are more industrial and ambient like. When I think of the nineties regarding soundtracks, my main association is japan cyberpunk and anime OSTs, like:

And you are right about horror soundtracks getting metal or getting metal blended with electronics/techno, I know that many people turned to 'techno' after listening to Mortal Kombat OST 'cause it blended it so perfectly

Re: Horror Disco, Dark Techno, Electronic OSTs in the 90s

It doesn't have to be horror OSTs at all, it's more about the influence from the 70s 80s period from horror scores to general electronic music.

Like, Christoph De Babalon used a ton of Penderecki Samples (Penderecki's music appears in the Shining) etc etc, the difference is I've met Christoph De Babalon and he's a horror fan, but for the rest I don't know. haha Cheers for the links smile
