Topic: Dragg or Witch House

Witch House is pretty much the worst genre name since the beginning of music, right?

But another media hyped genres this year. some of this stuff reminds me of old wave synth stuff mixed with screwed and chopped. definitely feeling that whole darkness vibe. half the artists who make it have unpronounceable, ungoogleable names with triangles, crosses, and other stuff. for those who are interested check out oOoOO, Salem, Balam Acab, and others.

I don't like it but it's a matter of taste so don't want to argue about it .. I will just state my opinion, take it with a grain of salt wink It just sounds childish and lame to my ears and not dark at all. It tries to be so menacing but it feels as threatening to me as my grandma bringing me warm milk and cookies in the morning. But what the hell is it with the auto-tuned vocals on that second track? Don't we have enough of that in R'n'B .. Yuck!

already the name sounds so very lame that is unbereable. witch house? wtf, what is that movies / books series for teenagers with vampires and such? it feels the same to me. HORRIBLE

Some of it's great, some of it isn't

I like Dream Boat - Fevers and that Balam Acab EP, oOoOo is OK, haven't heard Salem yet

It's basically IDM given a makeover. Lots to like, but with that silly name it's easy to ridicule.

Also: Bands who are supposed to be 'witch house' have very little in common besides superficial things. You'd never guess that some of the tracks posted in this thread were supposed to be the same style. As a 'genre' name, I think it's a joke designed to get some attention

To each his own, but I think that balam acab tune is pretty magical, doesn't sounds "horrible" at all. I like loads of this stuff
OoOoo is excellent though, more pop sensibility underpinned with weird production, arrangement, hooks and sluggish shuffly drums.

dunno why its called house as it seems more analogius with hiphop / electronica to me - whatever that actually is. the whole sound dovetails nicely for me with slow organic 100-110bpm house and darkstar-esque vocal stuff.

these tracks are actually pretty good. the witch house I heard before was some awful slowed down 90's pop with ambient drones. apparently we have pitchfork to blame for the name.

I assumed it had more to do with Dreams Inside The Witch House by HP Lovecraft than House the genre. In many ways I think I was drawn to it because I heard people go on and on about how awful they thought it was, which also works for movies I like.

Well, I'm oblivious to whatever was in the media about this, but I don't have a tv and sometimes live in my own little world.

I like the name Drag, I'm not sure why it didn't stick, not only does it describe the music quite well but there are the other connotations from messing with the speed of vocals ie. women become men, men become women / people pretending to be something they are not to reveal more about themselves psychologically.

Yeah it`s an amazing song and you know what, 'See Birds' is in the new L'Oreal commercial featuring Beyonce.  yikes  Haven't seen a link online yet. Weird, and kinda wonderful in equal measures. Check out a playlist Balam Acab made for Russian magazine Look At Me .
