It's not independence for South Ossetia, it's them being absorbed into Russia as an "autonomous region" (which sounds a lot like the Tibet/China status quo)

for now it looks like things might chill a bit. I saw somewhere that Russian "peacekeepers" will be deployed to georgia and NATO is also talking about sending peacekeepers. Yeah, I don't see any problems on the horizon there.

In a way maybe its a trade between Russia and US for something already done or will be done later.
Like, "O.K. you can take back georgia but give us (x) in return."

but being that the West has spent billions on the pipeline and considering the tensious relations between the West and Russia, I personally find that a little tough to believe.

Who really knows?

it paints georgia as the initial aggressor although there isn't proof of this nor is there any that civilians have been murdered according to a human rights organization on site in georgia. that's what i read from news.bbc.co.uk anyway..

edit: i think the article claimed no evidence of genocide or ethnic cleansing by some human rights organization to be more precise

i understood that georgia did start large scale aggressions by bombing south ossetia, so to a certain extent it is true. what went before in order to provoke these bombings though is a little less clear to me.

it seems the Russian leaders have gone insane, saying shit like they don't care if they become isolated from the world and that the Georgian war was orchestrated by the USA in order to get McCain elected. wtf? sounds like they have a deathwish. they've had a few vodkas too many imo.
