AKG BX-20 is the love of my life.
I have two different springs. Both are old and were very cheap.
Tapco 4400a - two independent channels, each with a 4-band graphic EQ. This thing sounds nasty and boingy in a good way. When I want something that is undeniably a spring reverb, this is what I want. Bonus points for looking like something you'd find in the Black Ark.
Biamp M/R 140 - Mono, with a 4-band "eq", but it's more like a filterbank. If you turn all 4 bands off, you get no reverb and the dry signal passes through. If you turn up just one band, frequencies in that band will have reverb, and the other bands pass through untouched. It's really cool. Has an attack limiter built-in to prevent spring slap (but you can still make it boing if you drive it hard). This is my favorite cheap spring reverb by far! Sounds classier than the Tapco, but it's still definitely a spring reverb.
AKG BX-20 is the king. I wish I had the space (and money) for a refrigerator-sized spring reverb.
AKG BX-20 and Zerotronics Mini-LE
im using a roland rv-100. borrowed it from a friend who thought it was broken since he got it 10 years ago. it wasn't broken, just needed a little cleaning of the pots.
the spring unit itself is american made and "manufactured by beautiful girls in milton, wis. under controlled atmosphere conditions" as it says on a sticker on the inside
i don't know how it compares to other spring reverb but i like the size of it.
I'm using a great british spring reverb - i like it, it's got a nice long tail- perferct for pad-y synths. it looks like this -
I had a vermona retroverb i must say it wasn't that exciting, I used the filter on it more then the reverb. The Electro Harmonix Holy Grail sounds much better, even though its a digital version of a springreverb it does a longer more haunting reverb and its way cheaper.
My first spring reverb was a Sansui home stereo thing, it was too subtle and couldn't be adjusted, I didn't like it.
My second one was the famous Fisher space expander, it sounded nice but it was noisy (probably just needed new tubes). This thing was kind of overrated considering it doesn't sound really special and it's just a bunch a parts with no box.
My third one was a Korg Gr-1, it was alright but kind of dark, it was also very noisy, it had an eq section and a gate, two things that are not very useful when used with a computer.
I then had a Fostex reverb similar to the 3180 I have now, but it was a hoem version with only rca and no dry/wet (I think), it was noisy as fuck.
I'm on my 2nd Fostex 3180 now, I bought a nice looking one to replace my beat up one recently.
This thing sounds great and is relatively easy to find cheap. I don't think I'll be upgrading to something else until I find an AKG BX reverb or something.
I have a boss RX-100 and holy grail. The RX sounds a little better than the grail, but a bit noisy.
It's also possible to make some nice noises when you hit it.
But due to it's z-shaped springs, it isn't possible to get the extreme wobbly sounds, which is the cool thing about spring reverbs.
It looks great on top of my DM-100, though.
I've got one made by UK budget guitar amp/PA company Torque. Think it's a generic design as I've seen the same panel layout of on different boxes. It has knobs for input level, reverb depth and 3 band EQ. Input, footswitch and output jacks.
Top tip if you're shopping for a spring reverb on Ebay: check the guitar effects listings, they're a lot cheaper than the pro-audio listings.
i have an Allsound FH-36.. but don't know much info about it. the guy i bought it from said it's from some time in 70's, seems to be built in germany. didn't use much other springs so can't really compare, but i like it.. though a bit noisy. makes some nice sounds if you drive it hard
Hi Echolot,
I have an Allsound FH36 too.
But reverbed sound from my piece is very dark - without higher frequencies.
I don't know if this is fault or Allsound's characteristic sound...
At the moment I use a WEM Audiomaster mixer with a spring reverb in it!! Kinda 'splashy' in a way..
But you should check out the Orban 111B. Curious? Just listen to almost all of the Daptone records.
