The Ecstasy of St. Teresa by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini
"I saw in his hand a long spear of gold, and at the iron's point there seemed to be a little fire. He appeared to me to be thrusting it at times into my heart, and to pierce my very entrails; when he drew it out, he seemed to draw them out also, and to leave me all on fire with a great love of God. The pain was so great, that it made me moan; and yet so surpassing was the sweetness of this excessive pain, that I could not wish to be rid of it."
I was at the Galleria Borghese in Rome last week. Saw some amazing Caravaggio paintings:
Boy With Basket of Fruit
David with the Head of Goliath
^Yes he's amazing
I like these Russian fairytale illustrations by Ivan Bilibin

This not-contemporary art reminded me of a piece of contemporary art based on said not-contemporary

The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck (1434)
There is a great book called Shamrock Tea by Ciaran Carson that features the Arnolfini Portrait quite heavily as well as Vermeer paintings such has his View of Delft
so whats up with those 2, did they cheat with a camera obscura
more power to them if they did!
Painters and techno-revolutionaries

Casper D Friedrich. His work is amazing. Don't know if he's really been hiding. He's part of the Northern European Tradition. Lots of moody guys painting very bleak and melancolic scenes.
Really inspiring, when you think of the films of say Michael Mann and the like.
'Monk by the sea' is another corker!
There's a really clear link for me between the mixes of say Meschi, Black metal (and 'doom') and Shemale's hyperborean journeying and the like. The irony is that his work is completely contemporary.
Look at his paintings in relation to the japanese photographer sugimoto
I mean hiding from me, i cant say ive seen his work before. Yep the subject matter i was gonna say its pretty contemporary for 1824, its different, a whole canvas with most of it being predominately slabs of ice.
I just noticed theres a crushed ship in there too, nice!
right im into this stuff, just might have to get a print of that ice painting oneday. I used to approach my illustration yrs ago like the monk painting. Extending the horizon and making the subject really small in the landscape, thats really nice.
here's another for all the gloom-bots
John Martin - The destruction of sodom (18??)
You can see this BIG in the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle, UK.
Definetly needs a black metal, doomy type act playing in front of it!
@ r2dj
thanks for the shamrock tea hint! just read some reviews, sounds interesting...
@ lixa-6
those two here are probably the most famous paintings by Friedrich:
Der Wanderer

@r2dj: I saw this at an exhibition recently, the colours were amazing in person

They all did! If they had the chance ;-)
Read this book. This is great for really understanding the (re) discovery of perspective in the Renaissance.
