Re: The Ugly Gear Topic

Do you remember that time when synths were judged for their sound and functionality? Probably not, but I do.

I can't think of any good design. All of them look like cheap car stereos or old telephone switches.

Monkey see, monkey do.

Re: The Ugly Gear Topic

You have really good values, I personally choose to listen to music made with good looking synths.

Stop that off-topic commenting! wink Common - it's just a fun thread.

I don't think this is meant to be taken too seriously. Of course the most important thing is what a synth is capable of doing, but I think looks count too since it's part of the user experience, just as the GUI is in software. And I think lame design is always worth nagging about, regardless of the context.

Re: The Ugly Gear Topic

Yeah...

Don't talk about the looks of cars, the only thing that counts is that it's able to transport you from A to B.
Don't talk about the looks of girls, the only thing that counts is that she's a nice and honest person.
...

Btw, I think no one would bother if a similar thread would be opened in a forum about electric guitars.

Total bullshit.

So you're implying that the field of industrial design is total bullshit, because a device's look and feel make absolutely no difference? And if this is not what you're saying, would you care to elaborate how synths differ from other electronic devices in this matter? Actually I don't even give a shit, but if you're taking things seriously, I'd also expect some serious arguments to back it up.

Re: The Ugly Gear Topic

Functionality should always rule over usability and design. The most useful software I use doesn't even have graphical user interfaces, so there are no sacrifices in functionality. Why should there be any? I'm disgusted by this new trend of dumbing down user interfaces. If you can't take the time to learn a little bit about the technology then crawl back to the cave where you came from.

Language is the most powerful tool in our culture and it's now being flushed down the drains.

roll bullshit.

The fact that you're using software period means that you are using a tool that was designed to make your life easier. If you were really that scared of "dumbing" your shit down, you'd be building boards and writing machine code.

If functionality is sacrificed or limited by a poo UI, that's called BAD DESIGN.

Re: The Ugly Gear Topic

I don't know whether this one is ugly or not, but it's certainly bizarre. I wanna hear how it sounds.

Building boards and writing machine code is what I do. I didn't get there by browsing lolcats on an iPad.

Re: The Ugly Gear Topic

from what i understand about metasonix stuff- it is ugly.   big_smile

i'd like to get some in my modular at some point.

First of all, hold on a sec and think what user interfaces are made for. They are for making interaction between humans and technology easier - to get shit done. For a normal person, easier doesn't mean having to know everything that's going on under the hood. Second, not being able to accept anything that's new sounds more like living in the cave to me.

Yeah, looks don't make a synth better and visual effects don't make a software better, but these are the kind of things that affect the image of the company behind them. I think that if a company is going to sell professional products, their products should also give a professional impression. The same goes for websites - funny fonts, all the colors of the rainbow and messy layout don't give a very professional image.

This ugly gear thing is all about aesthetics and has nothing to do with the tech specs.
